Won’t Say Anything
Hello Seahorse!
Hoy A Las Ocho
(Released November 2008)
I create my playlists based on the period I found out about the songs therein (e.g., Compiled Mid-2005, Compiled Late 2006, Compiled Early 2008, etc.). It’s like painting a picture of a particular juncture of your life; the playlist serves to remind you of what was happening and how you were like during this time. This is also one of the reasons I either dwell on a given song or skip it before it even plays. There are occasions you want to fondly recollect but there are also those you simply want to push back to the farthest part of your mind. It doesn’t matter if it’s a beautiful track in itself — it’s the context of listening to it for the first time that truly defines it, at least for me.
This track, Won’t Say Anything, is such a delightful tune. I fancied the song when I heard it for the first time but I knew it was love when when I saw the music video, which I thought was a fun, non-pretentious way to do quirky. It’s just a cheery, feel-good song but the irony is, the day I chanced upon it was one of the worst, if not the worst, days of my professional life. Suffice it to say that something unexpected, unwarranted, and utterly humiliating happened — so bad that I found myself dropping everything I had planned for the day and taking off to the city to clear my head.
Given this context, I probably would have never listened to the song anymore (which begs the question, why even put it in your library) but the song is just loads of fun that I am able to listen to it (repeatedly at times) without dwelling on the wretchedness that was this day. “A song that makes me happy,” yes it is.
