Okay, “hate” is a strong word. But apparently not for the youngsters of the 90s, namely: 1) die-hard Backstreet Boys fans who loathed ‘N Sync (and vice-versa), 2) hardcore Hanson groupies who hated The Moffatts (and vice-versa), and 3) avid Spice Girls supporters who detested All Saints (and vice-versa). I could understand the discord in #1 and #2 but, looking back, it was pointless to even compare the Spice Girls with All Saints. Both groups were British, but that’s probably where the similarity starts and ends.
I was on Team Spice Girls. My favorite was Posh, whom I always felt was marginalized in the group OH BUT LOOK AT HER NOW! Anyway, being a die-hard fan it was only natural to hate on copycat girl groups like Solid HarmoniE and the Funky Diamonds. But I found myself channeling my hatin’ toward All Saints, which conveniently gained popularity around the time the Spice Girls disbanded. I didn’t care whether the group made good music or not — I was simply appalled at how full of hot air these four girls were, constantly putting the Spice Girls down and going as far as to redefine “girl power,” which the Spice Girls coined in the first place. (Oh god, look who took it way too seriously.)
After a few years though, I admitted that the music of All Saints was not too bad and found myself listening to the songs the group released. But it was when I heard easy-on-the-ear Pure Shores that I finally accepted that I didn’t hate this band anymore.
