Day 16 - A Song that You Used to Love but Now Hate

This entry a part of the 30 Day Song Challenge

* * *

Ah, this one was a challenge. It would have been easier to cite a song that I used to hate but now love (because there are too many of them). The problem with identifying one that I used to love but now hate is that, most likely, it wouldn’t be in my music library. Well, I do have a music folder appropriately labeled “What Should I Do With You?” containing songs that I don’t listen to as much anymore. But I wouldn’t consider any one of them as a song that I hate, as hate is quite an intense word.

So I rummaged through my old CD compilations and found some “worthy” candidates for this day’s challenge:

  • Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls
  • Cruisin’ by Huey Lewis and Gwyneth Paltrow
  • Runaway by The Corrs
  • Lost in Space by Lighthouse Family
  • Put Your Records on by Corinne Bailey Rae

The only problem was, I didn’t end up exactly hating those tracks — they just became less interesting over time. And then I suddenly remembered: in late 2002 I fell in love with this beautiful song playing on the radio. Unfortunately though, I was not able to get the title the first time I heard it. But it wasn’t much of a challenge because a few days later, everyone was singing it and radio stations were playing it like crazy. And just like that, the song lost all its allure.

Once again, it’s a matter of taste/context. Taken on its own, it’s a perfectly fine acoustic song. I guess I just have an aversion to over-performed, overplayed hits, and this was an over-performed and overplayed #1 hit in the country.
