Send Me on My Way
Rusted Root
When I Woke
(Released August 1994)

Not only is this is the second song from Rusted Root but it’s also the second song from When I Woke that I’ve identified in this music challenge. I would, as much as possible, want to diversify the song choices (i.e., one song per artist) but Send Me on My Way really fits the bill for the Day 21 dictate.

Doesn’t this song just inspire positivity? It never fails to put me in a good mood — as though the world were beautiful, as though life were easy. It’s no wonder this feel-good song was used in several movies. I first heard it on Matilda, then Pie in the Sky, then Ice Age. I searched far and wide for the title of the song with only “on my way, on my way” as my key words. But it wasn’t until 2002 that I finally found my way to this song (thanks to Audiogalaxy!).

To be perfectly honest, I don’t understand half of what the vocalist is singing. But from the words that I can decipher, I figure the song is about finding one’s bliss. Or maybe my interpretation has been colored by the respective scenes in the aforementioned movies where the song played!

For all our benefit, the lyrics are as follows:

On my way
On my way

I would like to reach out my hand
I may see you, I may tell you to run
You know what they say about the young

Well pick me up with a golden hand
I may see you, I may tell you to run
You know what they say about the young

I would like to hold my little hand
How we will run, we will…
How we will crawl, we will…

I would like to hold my little hand
How we will run, we will…
How we will crawl, send me on my way.

Send me on my way

My favorite line is “you know what they say about the young” because I would have never figured that in a million years. I’m ashamed to say that all the while I thought it was just gibberish! But I find that to be a very interesting line of lyrics that I’d consider it for a tattoo, were I to get one.
