Happiness
Abra Moore
Strangest Places
(Released May 1997)
The complete irony with Happiness is that it is anything but happy.
So I lie about it
And I tell ‘em I’m feeling fine
And I’ll cry about it
Hoping tomorrow will change my mind
Happiness has come to this
And God, it’s such a heavy burden to bear
That, ladies and gents, is happiness according to Abra Moore. I think I’d rather be sad.
Seriously though, Abra Moore is pretty underrated considering her pretty solid body of work. In fact, a couple of songs from Strangest Places were featured in various movies and TV shows, which goes to show that there’s talent there. I was lucky to snag a copy of the album in the sale pile (around P100 as I recall it) in 2004!
As far as the song is concerned, it’s not exactly one that I listen to when I’m sad… more like when I’m in a pensive mood haha. I recall something Alanis Morissette said in an interview on The Hour: “I think I stopped aspiring to be happy a long time ago because happiness is such a temporary state.” She furthered that it’s peace that’s enduring; it’s peace that underlies all human emotions — “happy, sad, scared, upset, devastated, excited…” But in this particular song the speaker, clearly, has aspired to be happy only to find out that it’s not the be-all and end-all of living.
