Day 24 - A Song that You Want to Play at Your Funeral

This entry a part of the 30 Day Song Challenge

First, a photo then the song because light travels faster than sound.

This is the photo I want to be displayed in my wake.

I have a feeling my family and friends would scour my 365 Days album in my hard drive for a picture to use but let this blog entry let everyone know that this is the photo I want. Just run a search for “Aldo_12.03” on my computer and it should come up!

Of course I want a slightly more cunning-looking photo of myself (à la Sebastian Valmont in Cruel Intentions) but this should do for now. Actually, any photo BUT my graduation picture would do.

Lately, I’ve found how some personal incidents have been a little convenient, if not coincidental. One time, I was having a legitimately bad day that after work I decided to leave town to get some fresh air. During my commute, the jeepney came to a halt by this karaoke joint and the song Pagsubok came on, as if to mock me. A few weeks later I would waste spend a good amount of time thinking about my death. And how convenient it was to stumble upon this piece on dying when I checked out the Opinion section at Inquirer.net later that day!

Last March I identified the one song I want to play at my funeral, so again this was a no-brainer.

High and Dry
Jamie Cullum
Twentysomething
(Released May 2004)

Jamie Cullum’s take on High and Dry is my favorite but since it’s my funeral, why don’t we go ahead and play all the versions of the song, including the original by Radiohead and the subdued and almost mournful version by Amanda Palmer.

If MGMT’s Time to Pretend is the song that describes me, High and Dry is the perfect song to play when I’ve departed.
