Day 13 - A photo of your best friend(s)
Well, I have three best friends and they are, as might be expected, the few people who almost know me inside-out. But my longest best friend is JB, and we go a looong way back.
I would have never imagined being friends with this person when I met him in the third grade. After all, he called me names and made fun of me (for reasons that I still don’t understand). But somehow we started hanging out in our last year of grade school and I realized that he wasn’t so bad after all, just a little bit.
He always begs to disagree (false humility perhaps) but he’s really one of the smartest people I know. He knows that “the earth’s crust” doesn’t literally translate to “balat ng lupa,” which I’d once pegged to be a plausible translation. In the middle of a movie I find myself asking clarification about a line this character said and he ends up waxing about the topic (e.g., bodies of water and the water cycle). The other night I asked him if “bedew” is the correct English translation for the Filipino term “wisik” and he said it probably isn’t, explaining that such particle was too miniscule for the Filipino verb. And the list goes on.
But two occasions come to mind why he’s one of my true best friends; I’ll tell you one. The day my two puppies mysteriously vanished from our new house (we’d just moved in), I texted my friends about the incident, and how sorrowful the first day of the year had turned out. My friends replied and expressed their condolences. But it was JB who came over and helped me look for my lost puppies in the neighborhood.
