Day 14 - A photo of one of your favorite family members
I’m a bad bad uncle and godfather because I play favorites. Well, I can’t help it, not when I have the most adorable nephew in the whole wide world. And that’s saying a lot for someone who isn’t fond of kids in general.
It was his first day in school this Monday, which is hard to grasp because it seems only yesterday when he was delivered by a stork to his mummy and daddy! He may be my favorite nephew but I know I’m not his favorite uncle. His favorite uncle appears to be my cousin Josh. Whenever we have a family gathering he gravitates toward him while I spend the entire time petitioning for his attention with glowing yoyos and toy animals. The only time I exist to him is when he wants to tinker with my tablet (which he thinks is a big iPod). He would come up to me with a no-nonsense “iPaaad,” thinking the gadget would magically appear out of thin air with those two syllables.
Oh but I am very fond of this little boy, mainly because we share two things in common: 1) a penchant for red cars (“I want wed fewawi”); and 2) a sense of discontent on our birthday. He celebrated his third birthday at McDonald’s, and the ever-ebullient party hostess asked him on the microphone, “Masaya ka ba ngayong birthday mo?” (Are you happy today, on your birthday?) My nephew curtly replied, “No,” and then looked away. At least we know where he got that from.
