Minor Detail #15

Common sense is not one of my strongest suits.

I’m a big believer in multiple intelligences and that one intelligence is not necessarily better than the other. While I think I’m slightly gifted in some aspects, I’ve always wondered where the hell I was when The Maker showered common sense and street smarts to the world. It appears I possess neither; and either, I think, would make me an infinitely better individual.

I think it’s easy to rag on people who are slow, dense, or gullible. As my good friend Joan loves to blurt out with unadulterated exasperation, “COMMON SENSE IS NOT SO COMMON!” Though, personally, I think it would make me quite the hypocrite to drop such a statement. After all, who am I to demand of common sense from others when I myself am slightly lacking in that department?

I never forget.

Actually, that’s not true. I’ve recently discovered that I have very selective memory. Or maybe I’m not always an active listener and observer because I tend to forget certain details about certain events and people. Friends would recount a story that they’ve (supposedly) already shared with me, but I would only vaguely remember it. Perhaps the incident lacked a sense of self-involvement? Or maybe it was not remotely interesting to begin with? But the things I choose to remember, I find that I rarely forget.

Which is both a boon and a bane.

I’m a cheapskate.

My close friends would beg to disagree but really, I’m a cheapskate. I’m not exactly tightfisted though because if I were, then my savings account should have already taken me to my dream destinations (will blog about them soon). Generally, I’m stingy but I don’t mind splurging on a couple of items, namely:

  • Food. I’m a picky eater and I’ve learned my lesson not to settle for less when it comes to gastronomic satisfaction. Case in point: I was worried I would overspend in a recent local trip so I avoided restaurants and settled for more affordable meals at the food court. It didn’t work out. I quickly realized that it was all right to shell out a little extra for a decent, delicious, vegetarian meal. I guess this makes me an even more insufferable travel companion (because all my friends are omnivores and are willing to eat anything, anywhere).
  • Office supplies. I don’t mind spending on quality items for my work space.
  • Air freshener. It’s an obsession. I’ve learned to divest myself of expensive hand soap but I can’t say no to air freshener.
  • Magazines and books, even if I don’t get around to reading all of them!
  • Movies and (good) popcorn. Doesn’t matter if it’s the best cinema in the world. If the popcorn isn’t good, I’m not watching the movie there! (Which reminds me, my Popclub Privilege Card is missing.)

Oh, just so you know, I take things personally.

I find it easier to say “I’m an instructor” versus “I teach” because teaching is coupled with learning – who am I to assume that my students have, in fact, “learned” from me?
